When studying the Bible, it’s important to not only read the words on the page but allow them to sink in, take hold and change us from the inside out. We recommend reading by the 4-R Method of Scripture mediation, which allows us to intentionally study God’s Word by diving in deeper to all He has for us.
The 4 R’s
Scripture Meditation Method
Read
Read a passage of Scripture that is 1-3 chapters in length. The size of the passage is important in order to understand the context of the message. Write down the passages you read.
Research
At the end of the passage, look for the verse that stood out most to you. Write that down. Re-read the verse and the verses surrounding it. Read material provided in a Study Bible or commentary on the passage. You might run a search online to read other opinions of the text. Record what you learned in this section.
Reflect
Meditate on the verse allowing it to soak into you. Meditation consists of reflective thinking, or contemplation, of the passage to discern its meaning or significance. The goal is to internalize and personalize the passage so that its truth can affect how you think, your attitude and ultimately, your actions. Note what the Holy Spirit is bringing up.
Respond
Pray and ask God, “What do you want me to do? How do you want me to live differently because of this?” Allow God to give you the one thing you are to do today. Write this tangible action step down and apply it to your life.
