AWANA Volunteers

Wednesdays | 5:45 – 8:15 p.m.

The Awana program is a parent/volunteer-child linked program. The ratio, for the program to be at its best, is five children to every one adult leader. Studies have shown a child needs seven different adults in their direct social circle to help solidify their faith. Awana gives a child another adult in that social circle to spur them on in their faith walk. Here are some ways to do just that:

Small group leaders are responsible for the same five to six kids each week.  They build relationships with a small group of children while listening to the child say their verse each week.  There is no requirement to teach any Bible lessons, we promise!  The small group leader is responsible for leading clubbers to their next rotation as well as actively participating in club rotations, such as games, arts & crafts and large group time.  This role is important for mentoring, modeling and advocating for this small group of assigned clubbers week to week.

Game leaders help lead age-appropriate games during Game Time.  These games are usually Awana specific games, which are easy to learn, but can also include games such as Capture the Flag or Dodge Ball.  The age of children is 5 to 18 which are broken into three, twenty-five-minute, age specific rotations.  Games is always a huge hit at Awana.  If you enjoy competition, Games is a fun place to spend your evening.

Bible Verse Listeners listen to clubbers say their verses which the child has been memorizing the week prior.  Small group leaders do this as well.  But sometimes clubbers have many verses to say, which can become time consuming.  This role is vital to helping keep small groups on schedule with rotations each night.

Floaters and Substitutes are volunteers who jump in wherever there are shortages on a given night.  The club runs 28 weeks a year.  Volunteers miss for various reasons such as sickness or being out of town.  These volunteers wait in the school lobby at the start of club to see if there are any missing leaders.  If there are none, you have free-time!

Secretaries keep track of all the verses said as well as hand out the child’s award which in some cases are placed on the child’s uniform immediately.  Some awards are pins, others are iron-ons, which parents would be responsible for at home.

Volunteers with the Awana program receive a discount based on their level of involvement.  Full-time volunteers attend each week and receive a discount of 50%.  A part-time volunteer is persons volunteering every other week.  The discount is 25% of the full year registration fee.

Each year Awana runs very closely to a typical school district schedule which include summer breaks.  The club typically starts early September and finishes late April.

While considering your involvement, note that parents are not permitted to lead their own child’s small group, but are allowed to be in the same rotation.  There are several reasons for this, but most notably to give your child an opportunity to have another adult spur them on in their faith journey.  Sometimes there are extenuating circumstances that warrant a child being with their parent each week.  Please speak directly to the Awana Coordinator about these needs.  We want each child to thrive at Awana.

Lastly, the program needs over 75 volunteers each week to be successful. The club is at its best when all volunteer roles are filled.  This enables volunteers to ward off burn out and the clubbers enjoy consistency.  Thank you for considering investing in the lives of children.  We hope you find your life enriched through serving as well.  Most of our leaders do!
