HOPE serves

To create effective programs, staff will often travel to villages spending extended time listening, learning and developing trust with communities. On a recent trip to a small island village accessible only by boat, a staff member, Juddie (not her real name) shared her experiences.

“The women cannot speak the Indonesian language,” Juddie says, “so it was difficult for me to communicate with them. Even so, I tried to communicate with the elderly mother as best as I could. My methods were to help her wash dishes and sweep the house. So she was able to understand that I was interested in her. These challenges can be daunting, particularly in remote and rural locations. The residents of this island are very cautious of foreigners. I know this from when I spoke with one man, but in my presence, he was not too suspicious because I used clothing that is polite in their eyes.”

The heart of our work is expressed through actions, such as washing dishes and sweeping floors to help an elderly woman feel valued, and through humility exemplified by Juddie’s comments: “From this lesson I learn that the main thing is how to convey God’s light through our love in our efforts.”

Juddie learns—and we learn from people like her who have been called with us to this place. We learn to love people in genuine good will, we learn to trust the source of our true security, we learn to face challenges with gratitude. As Juddie says, “I am thankful because this forms an opportunity. God has already answered all our prayers and it seems will give opportunities to follow.”

The purpose of Outreach Indonesia is to develop a partnership of Indonesian and World Christians to equip Indonesian church planting teams to reach the Chantik for Christ and a fellowship established that is culturally relevant among this people group.

Meet the Chantik people

In an undisclosed location in Indonesia, Cherry Hills is helping Indonesian Christians plant churches among the “Chantik,” a special name for the ethnic group in Indonesia to whom Outreach Indonesia hopes to bring the Gospel.

What the Chantik believe

There are an estimated 3.5 million people living in this region and less than 50 are known to be Christians. Most Chantik people are strict Sunni Muslims, but are influenced by "animistic" ideology and various superstitions. These beliefs are focused on seeking protection through magic by controlling good and evil spirits. The Chantik are not only resistant to Christianity, some are openly hostile. Islam is deeply embedded in education, family life and every cultural ceremony.

Serving Indonesian Christians

Outreach Indonesia, in partnership with Pioneers USA, serves Indonesian Christians by training and supporting them in the church-planting process. Field personnel become part of the culture among this people group in order to develop relationships in which they can share their faith and to provide any needed human services.

Culturally relevant training

Indonesian Christians recruited to plant churches among the Chantik are enrolled in a training center which utilizes a curriculum tailored to the culture and belief systems of the Chantik. However, operation of the training center will be discrete. A strong network of reliable relationships will be essential to Outreach Indonesia's effectiveness and survival.

Reach Out!

Outreach Indonesia’s home team provides opportunities to serve the church and join the Lord in impacting the eternal destinies of the Chantik people.

HOPE reaches

“As the rain and the snow come down from heaven, and do not return to it without watering the earth and making it bud and flourish, so that it yields seed for the sower and bread for the eater, so is my word that goes out from my mouth: It will not return to me empty, but will accomplish what I desire and achieve the purpose for which I sent it.”

—Isaiah 55:10,11
