If you'd like to help with the humanitarian outreach
in Haiti, two of Cherry Hills' ministry partners are working to provide
relief. Donations given to the Cherry Hills disaster relief fund will
be given to World Vision and Global Vision Citadel Ministries.
Haiti Update
Our congregation responded very generously to the enormous needs of the Haitian people in the aftermath of the devastating earthquake. Here’s an update on how those funds are being used by World Vision and Global Vision Citadelle Ministries.
World Vision has distributed more than 14 metric tons of food that has helped 72,000 people in 32 camps in Port-au-Prince. World Vision is providing holistic medical care in 10 different camps and their Water Sanitation and Health teams are working to establish latrines and water facilities within the camps.
World Vision is also assisting about 500 children in four centers in Jimani and is providing support for 19 physicians and other medical personnel at the Good Samaritan Hospital. World Vision Dominican Republic has supported the operation in Jimani with 105 volunteers (including 22 health promoters, 15 translators, 30 child/youth leaders and 38 warehouse staff). World Vision Haiti is assessing the impact of the migration of over 150,000 people from Port-au-Prince to the rural areas, where most of the World Vision Area Development Programs are located, and the effect this will have on local churches. Proposals are being created to help resource churches and these communities to respond to the growing needs the influx of the population will have.
Yves Prophete from Global Vision Citadelle Ministries reports that their ministry is housing and feeding 56 refugees who are currently living on their orphanage campus. They have also been feeding people at a nearby hospital. Their longer-term goal is twofold. They would like to build at least 100 homes for the people that have lost their homes. It will cost about $15,000 per home to build homes that are earthquake proof.
They also want to start a small business loan program by which they would loan money to the people in the churches and the people moving into the homes they build so that they can build a business that will allow them to pay the principal back, which would allow GVCM to build more homes. Their administrative building sustained some damage. They hope to start repairing that building soon.

People who give to the Cherry Hill Community Church Haiti Disaster Relief Fund have the option of deducting these contributions on either their 2009 or 2010 federal tax returns but not both, according to the Internal Revenue Service.
Taxpayers who itemize deductions on their 2009 return qualify for this special tax relief provision (H.R. 4462), enacted January 22. Only cash contributions made after January 11, 2010 (this is after the earthquake), and before March 1, 2010, are eligible. This includes contributions made by check or online by credit card.
The new law does not only apply to gifts of securities or other property contributions. To get a tax benefit, donors must itemize their deductions on Schedule A. Those who claim the standard deduction, including all short-form filers, are not eligible.
Cherry Hills Community Church will issue special contribution statements in March for contributions qualifying for this special tax provision after the qualifying period ends but before the April 15 tax filing deadline.
